Black and Navy: enemies turned civil

Like many others, I tuned into the Emmy Awards yesterday evening. Before the big event, E! Entertainment hosted a Red Carpet special where the Fashion Police team (Giuliana Rancic, Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne, and George Kotsiopoulos) checked out what the stars were wearing. In preparation for the event, the crew sat down and discussed different fashion myths. One of them being that you can NOT wear black and navy. My instant reaction was to disagree with the experts. For the longest time, I had filed ‘black+navy’ in the ‘illegal’ section of my fashion file cabinet. However, after giving Giuliana some time to defend her approval of the combo, I had a change of heart.
According to the crew, navy and black can live peacefully as long as one of them appears only as a slight accent. In other words, if you want to go out in your sassy navy party dress, you CAN wear your black pearls, OR your black Michael Kors satchel, OR a pair of black, strappy stilettos (as I did in the outfit displayed). However you can NOT do all three, because too much black will offset the bold navy color. What you can do is add some silver accessories and a colorful bag to brighten the look. And vice versa, if you are wearing a black-dominated outfit, a touch of navy is perfectly acceptable.

Lauren Conrad proves that Navy +Black=CHIC
So keep in mind ladies, the fashion world is constantly evolving. What might be considered a serious crime now, can turn out to be fashion forward.
